  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 packets rapid-rise yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 4 oz cream cheese (for icing)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for icing)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water with yeast in a bowl; let sit until frothy (about five minutes). In a stand mixer bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Knead until smooth.
  2. Transfer dough to a greased bowl; cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about one hour).
  3. Punch down the dough; roll into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread softened butter over the dough; sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Roll tightly from one edge; cut into 12 equal pieces.
  5. Place rolls in a greased baking sheet; cover and let rise for another thirty minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. While baking, beat together cream cheese and butter; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract until creamy.
  8. Spread cream cheese icing over warm rolls before serving.
