  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 24 tbsp milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Stir this mixture into the dry ingredients and gradually add remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  3. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl. Cover it and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Mix softened butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon in a small bowl until combined.
  6. Once risen, roll out the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle.
  7. Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Sprinkle mini chocolate chips if desired.
  9. Roll tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  10. Place rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover them and let rise again for another 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  13. While rolls bake, beat softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth.
  14. Gradually add powdered sugar along with vanilla extract and milk until desired consistency is reached.
  15. Once baked and slightly cooled, generously spread cream cheese frosting over the top of the rolls.
